Is gender a biological imperative or a political construct? Or both? Is feminism more than a reaction against the patriarchy? What role do lesbians (and, even more controversially, gay men) have in feminist critique? Can a man even be a feminist? What is the relationship between sexual expression and gender identity? Where is the point of convergence of third-wave feminism and post-structuralism?
These are neither idle questions nor the speculations of dissociated social analysts. They are central to understanding the world: the way we relate to one another; how we come to grips with structural inequality; whether we adapt to or react against the heteronormative criteria that have historically provided the basis of social interaction. These and other questions explored in ?Fifty Key Concepts in Gender Studies? form the psycho-political infrastructure of our lives in the first quarter of the twenty-first century.
These are complex issues, and it is to the authors' credit that they do not try to simplify concepts to provide easily digestible print bites. In the article ?Power?, they introduce their subject thus: ?To define power is an enormously complex matter and we can only attempt a thumbnail sketch here in order to examine the way power has been used in the areas of feminist and gender studies? (p.115). The discussion which follows is a incisive account of the developing awareness of the uses of power within the women's movement in its early years, since ?feminists did not anticipate the force of the power struggles that would be encountered as an effect of group dynamics and the rehearsing of identity politics . . .? (p. 117). The section ends with an examination of the current analysis of power as experienced by feminist theorists.
This book does not answer all the questions it raises, but it comprehensively reviews the literature which examines and illuminates the concepts covered. In brief (three- to four-page) essays, Jane Pilcher and Imelda Whelehan address such problems in feminist theory as ?Class?, ?Identity Politics?, ?Queer Theory?, ?Violence?, and forty-six other central areas of analysis by feminist thinkers from the 1960s to the present. For example, in the article entitled ?Gender? the views of Shulamith Firestone (?patriarchy exploits women's biological capacity to reproduce as their essential weakness . . . ?) are placed side by side with those of Ann Oakley (?backlash writings return gender to a close association with the biological or natural . . .?). The authors then go on to say, ?recent writings on sex and gender suggest that feminism has relied upon too great a polarisation [sic] of the sex/gender distinctions . . .? (p. 57). It is for the reader to think closely about these arguments and form her own conclusions.
Each concept/chapter includes a ?further reading? appendix, giving bibliographical references to the works cited in the discussion. Very brief annotations of the titles give helpful guidance to the point of view of each entry.
This is probably not a book to read through, but a book to read in, and not only once, but many times. All fifty concepts are significant; the analyses are profound and nuanced; and the text is dense. But there are surely no more important questions to explore as we try to fashion a life of psychological congruence and social equality for ourselves and for all women and men. It will give both a newcomer to feminist (and post-modern) thought, and the sophisticated post-structuralist a lot to think about.
