Excerpt from A Catalogue of the Library of the Salem Athenaeum, in Salem, Massachusetts: To Which Is Prefixed a Brief Historical Account of the Institution, With Its Charter and by-Laws HE Trustees of the salem atheneum, soon after the removal of their Library to plummer hall, ordered the preparation of a new Catalogue. The Compiler, having, for several years previous, performed the ordinary duties of Librarian, accepted the task which was assigned to him, although conscious of wanting that culture and special experience, without which the most painstaking endeavors could not insure precision and neatness in the result. These personal defects have rendered more difficult a work, which, of itself, is perplexing and tedious to a degree which only those can estimate who have been engaged in similar labors.
