Not illustrated. 1906 Excerpt: ...edible fruit is covered with silvery scales. ELEAGNUS GLABRA (Smooth Oleaster--Wild Olive) Elaeagnaceae. Japan. Deciduous wall shrub. 3 to 6 feet. Whitish. Summer. Seed; layers; cuttings. ELEAGNUS MACROPHYLLA (Big-leaved Oleaster) Elaeagnaceae. Japan. From 6 to 10 feet. Evergreen wall shrub. Greenish-yellow. Autumn. Seed; layers; cuttings. This is a good shrub for training on a west wall; the large, roundish leaves are silvery beneath and have a tendency to curl up their edges. It grows well in any good garden soil. ELAGNUS MULT1FLORA. Elaeagnaceas. Japan. 1873. 3 feet. Deciduous wall shrub. Orange fruit. Seed; layers; cuttings. Syns. E. crispa; E. edulus; E. longipes; E. odorata; E. rotundifolia. This is one of the best of the Oleasters for garden purposes, and several varieties are to be obtained; the fruit is juicy and pleasing, the leaves green on the upper surface and silvery-white beneath, while the dark redbrown twigs give a very pretty contrast in colour. EMBOTHRIUM COCCINEUM (Fire Bush) Proteaceae. S. America. 1851. From 3 to 20 feet. Evergreen wall shrub. Scarlet. May. Cuttings of young shoots or of half-ripened wood in sandy soil under a bell-glass. This very handsome plant is hardy enough for warm localities in the south of England, and would probably thrive well in Ireland; it is seen chiefly in Cornwall and Devonshire. Robinson, in The English Flower Garden, speaks of it as follows: "At Coombe Martin, in South Devon, it grows quite 20 feet high, and is a spectacle of wondrous beauty about the end of April or the beginning of May, when every twig carries a cluster of fiery flowers ." Plant in a soil made of fibrous peat, loam and coarse sand. ENKIANTHUS CAMPANULATUS Ericaceze. Japan. 1888. 6 feet. Evergreen wall shrub. Red. July. Cutt...
