Along with a useful introduction to the field and its emergence into wide appreciation, the book offers extended captions to guide readers inside the images and the artists' own worlds. Curated for Marlborough Gallery by Matthew Arnett and Paul Arnett, in honor of their father's cultural vision, it includes works by the artists and African American quilts from William Arnett's personal collection. Artists include : Lonnie Holley, Thornton Dial, Purvis Young, James "Son" Thomas, Mary T. Smith, Joe Minter, Hawkins Bolden, Joe Light and Ronald Lockett.
