This short set of stories, part of the author's longer compilations set in the fictional Perthshire town of Drumtochty, is inexpressibly moving and beautiful. The language is largely in Scots dialect - a speech which has nearly died out, but which shares an ancestor with modern English. Although the stories are set in a devoutly Christian milieu, it is their spiritual beauty which is so striking. I challenge anyone to read these without tears, not of sorrow but of something simpler and purer.
