While the pieces date from around that time -- Vaughan Williams' Piano Quintet in C minor was composed in 1903, De Falla's El Amor Brujo in 1914-1915, and Ravel's Le Tombeau de Couperin (heard here in an arrangement for piano sextet by Marijn van Prooijen) is from 1918, precise dating is not as important as the fact that Vaughan Williams was Ravel's friend and student, and both men knew De Falla, so a convergence was certainly likely. It would be stretching things to suggest specific musical influences between these works, but the Stockholm Syndrome Ensemble is primarily interested in setting the scene, perhaps to illustrate how music can transport listeners to this distant time.
