Leaves serrate, glabrous, at first cordate, obtuse, afterwards acute, and the sinus at base nearly ett'aced as the wings along the petioles dilate, generally 2--3 inches Iqng, li wide, sometimes twice that size. Scape 3--4 inches long, 2 scales rather below the middle. Corolla white; the upper petal veined at base with purple, the lateral petals thinly bearded along the lower edge. Both Walter aud Michaux appear to have united this with the proceding species. Grows in wet soils, along the sides of ditches. Very common. Flou ers Februa y--Aprfl. 3. Villosa. Walt. V. foliis conlatis, obtu-Leaves cordate, obtuse, sis, pubentisstmis, canes-very pubescent, somecentibus; calyce acuto; what hoary; calvx acute; floiibus parvulis, cceru-flowers small, pale blue, lescentibus. E. J Walt. p. 219. Perennial. Leaves crena-e, very downy rather than villous, soft, thick; tne sinus at base small, open; when young the leaves acquire from the pubescence a hoary aspect, and a-. e variegated with p'.rple-veins. Petals small, the 3 upper bearded, the 2 lower syrmkled rith hairs. The late flowers, as remarked by Walter, frequently apetalous. From the V. sagittata, with which it has been confounded, very distinct. Grows in dry sandy soils. Leaves generally prostrate. Flowers March--April. 4. Rotcniufolia. Mich. V. acaulis; foliis orbiculato-cordatis, subdentatis, glabriusculis; petiolo puhescente; calyce obtuso; floribus luteis.
