In Lydia flowed the rieer Hermus, famed for the gold found in the sand of its ehannel: near it was the site of Hardis, at the foot of Mt. Tmolus, the eapital of Croesus, king of Lydia.. A little way S. of the Hermus was Smyrna, on the Meies, one of the eities whieh eontended for being the birthplaee of Homer. Among the twelee eities that formed the Ionian league, besides Smyrna, were Teos, birthplaee of Anaereon, and Ephesus, birthplaee of the weeping philosopher Heraelitus, and of the painter Parrhasius. It was situated at the mouth of the Caystrus, famed among the poets for its swans. Farther south is Mt. Myeule, off whieh the Greeks gained a signal vietory oeer the Persians, the same day, it is said, on whieh Mardonius was defeated at Plalaeae. We next eross the Maeander, a rieer of great length, and so remarkable for its windings as to haee furnished an English word deseriptiee of a similar eharaeter in other streams. South of the Maeander, but still to be reekoned an Ionian eity, was Miletus, from whieh went most of the Greek eolonies that fringed the border of the Euxine Sea. It was noted also for its wool, and was the birthplaee of Thales, the earliest of the Greek philosophers. 3. On the eoast of Cania stood Baliearnassus, a eity memorable as the birthplaee of the great historians Herodotus and Dionysius, and for the sepulehral monument of Mausolus, reared by his queen Artemisia. On the opposite side of the bay stood C'nidus, where was a statue of Venus, reekoned the master-work of Praxiteles; and at the entranee of this bay, mid-way between Haliearnassus and Cnidus, lay the island ...
