Excerpt: ... opposite is the graphic precision of such simple diction, to that of the inflated style which hides the finest lineaments and tints of nature, beneath a load of gorgeous, ill-sorted epithets. It is farther obvious, that through this extreme simplicity, the Gospel narrative derives all the animation, arising from the dramatic display of character already noticed: for thus have the very words of the discourses and conversations, with the peculiar circumstances in which they were deliver ed, been preserved. One instance, which might be selected from many, of the effect of all these features of animated style thus combined, is in the 24th chapter of the Gospel of Matthew, where Jesus and his disciples being represented as seated on the Mount of Olives, looking over to the magnificent buildings of Jerusalem, the disciples anxiously interrogate their master concerning that destruction of them, of which he had a little before been speaking; and he, in reply, utters the minute and affecting prediction of the miseries, by which the ruin of city and temple were to be preceded. Of the animation, indeed, which so generally pervades the whole narrative, a more practical illustration cannot be suggested, than the rich field for the exercise of the historical pencil which it has afforded: and how far that field is from being exhausted, perhaps every painter of a cultivated mind will allow. The richness of that field, by no means arises solely from the deep interest and importance of the general subject. The introduction of Christianity into the world, with the attendant facts announcing its divine origin, might have been narrated without furnishing such materials for works of taste.
