As early intervention/early childhood special education (EI/ECSE) has evolved over the past fifty years, it is increasingly apparent that a comprehensive book is needed to present an overview of this field, which provides services to infants, toddlers, preschoolers, and early primary children with delays and disabilities and their families. As professors at a university with a program in EI/ECSE, we have experienced the need for a textbook to afford a strong foundation for the multifaceted components of the EI/ECSE field. Some introductory special education texts focus exclusively on infants and toddlers, some on preschoolers, and some on children from birth through age five. Others address children from birth through age twentyone, with limited emphasis placed on the early years. Because the field of early childhood is recognized by the Division for Early Childhood (DEC) of the Council for Exceptional Children (CEC) and the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) as including children from birth through age eight, this book is designed to specifically emphasize children in this age range and their families"--
