The year has been marked by an intensive effort to maintain a cost-effective operation while at the same time offering growth in services and resources. At a time when metropolitan libraries across the nation are curtailing hours, staff, and services because of increased fiscal restraints, the Boston Public Library is working to go beyond business-as-usual and advance in services by streamlining procedures and systems and by seeking additional support through gifts and endowments. This year saw considerable progress in the long-range building program, in program activities, in production of resources in large-print materials, and in General Library holdings, in cooperative programs with the Boston Li brary Consortium, in application of systems to biblio graphic activities, and in other areas herewith enumerated.
