Published at the time of the Bicentennial, The Atlas of the American Revolution is a collection of fifty maps portraying the military and naval activities in North America at the time of the American War of Independence. The modern reader is give a unique opportunity to see how the war unfolded from the perspective of the British people at home; one should remember that rapid visual communication did not exist at the time of American Revolution; once a battle took place, mapmakers in Britain created detailed maps of the various engagements in the Thirteen Colonies. The book includes a succinct historical narrative of the military and non-military events of the American Revolution. I especially liked the fold out pages showing a chronological/geographical flow chart of the battles and events of all theaters of war. What I found interesting, too, was the number of comparisons made between the American Revolution and the Vietnam War (although this is not surprising given the fact the book was published in 1975 when South Vietnam surrendered to the Communist North). There are many books on the American Revolution but this particular volume stands out due to its concise narrative and unique emphasis on the maps published at the time of the War of Independence. Students of the American Revolution will surely want this wonderful book in their libraries.
