It's a pretty straight forward Beauty and the Beast story but it's told beautifully. Like my sister, I wonder who at Disney read this book before the cartoon came out (there were a few striking similarities that may just be coincidence but I doubt it). I wanted a little more time at the end; once it started to wrap up it seemed over too quickly. I do like that her older sisters (who are traditionally spoiled brats) were sweet, and I love Ger.

Great book.
The book is great and full of descriptions every single page. You might have a whole chapter describing the beast's garden. I enjoyed it for the most part and think its quite a book.

All-Time Favorite
What can I say? This is one of my all-time favorite books. I first read this book in fifth grade and I still read it at least once a year now in my early twenties. This should be shoved forcibly into the hands of young girls, although I don't see why boys wouldn't enjoy it, as well. The protagonist is intelligent and sensible, qualities that sometimes lack in popular role models. It's impossible not to care deeply about her characters. I believe this was McKinley's first book; in this and in all other since then she has demonstrated a mastery of the English language, with an amazing talent for establishing mood through descriptive language.
