Pre-occupied, and a little self-absorbed, she had even taken her seat before she noticed a superb bouquet of white flowers on one side of her plate, and a morocco case on the other. Her astonished eyes, half mechanically, went from the flowers to the case. She opened it, and saw inside a dainty necklace of fine gold chains, with here and there a dropping pearl--a delicate and costly trifle. It did not need the Colonel, s card to tell her whom she had to thank for it. But to thank him for it was exactly what Sybil could not do.
