References have been brought up to date, and emphasis on formulating and solving problems has been strengthened with numerous new problems. The book begins with a unique historical introduction to the field of biomechanics, followed by a chapter which relates the definitions and vocabulary of applied mechanics to biological tissues. These tools are then used to treat in detail the mechanical properties of blood, including blood cells and vessels. The remaining chapters discuss the viscoelastic properties of biological fluids and solids, as well as the mechanics of muscle, bone and connective tissue.
