A powerful story about the devastating effects of bullying and the unbreakable bonds of true friendship. From the beloved author of Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret, Judy Blume's Blubber is a sensitive exploration of bullying, self-esteem, and the challenges of growing up. Blubber is a thick layer of fat that lies under the skin and over the muscles of whales . . . When Linda innocently reads out her class project, everyone finds it funny. Linda can't help it if she's overweight, but what starts as a joke leads to a sustained and cruel ritual of humiliation. Jill knows she should defend Linda, but at first she's too scared. When she eventually stands up to the bullies, she becomes their next victim - and what's worse, Linda is now on their side . . . In this classic novel, Blume sensitively addresses issues of body image, peer pressure, and the importance of self-confidence. Blubber is a must-read for anyone who has ever faced the challenges of fitting in and standing up for what's right.

Selina's review is erroneous. I don't think she actually read the book. Blubber is not about a group of kids who
befriends an overweight girl they think is mean. It's the exact opposite.
Linda Fisher is an overweight girl who makes the mistake of doing her class report on whales. As a result, Wendy, the most popular girl in class, and pals begin to ruthlessly torment Linda by calling her Blubber and subjecting her to various forms of humiliation.
It's told from the POV of another classmate who reluctantly is pulled along the trajectory of the teasing partly due to peer pressure and partly due to fear of becoming the next victim.
This is a raw and honest look at bullying and peer pressure which is just as relevant today as it was 35 years ago.

A great Lesson
In this day and age of obesity in children its nice to see a story dealing with such sensitive material. First impressions are not always right. The girls in the grade school class realize this when they befriend an over weight girl who they beleived at first to be mean. This sweet coming of age story is great for girls. It teaches ablout tolerence and inner beauty.
