A friend of mine encouraged me to read his old, cherished book, Blue Sloop at Dawn. I am so glad I did.
Richard Bode writes about his childhood days, sailing on Long Island's, The Great South Bay. Though not as salty as Mr. Bode, I too sailed the Great South Bay as a young girl. It brought back so many memories of days' gone by. All the places described are completely accurate. The time frame is Long Island in the 1930's and 40's. My parents moved out from the city to LI as well, and shared many of Mr. Bode's experiences. You can almost smell the salty bay air and hear the gulls while reading about these familiar places. A nostalgic, wholesome, pleasant read. Get it and read it down at the dock.

Getting to Know Richard Bode
This was perhaps the most delightful book I have read so far this year. It was especially enjoyable because I had just finished Richard Bode's "First you have to row a little boat". Because of Bode's writing style as well as the message of his book I wanted to read a copy of "Blue Sloop at Dawn". To me, this was like a Paul Harvey "the rest of the story" which really filled in the blanks. It also is helpful in getting to know Bode a little better. Again, the best book I have read this year!
