Excerpt from Book Sales of 1897: A Record of the Most Important Books Sold at Auction and the Prices Realized With Introduction Notes and Index IN my last volume I was compelled to open my foreword to the reader with an apology for the lateness of its appearance. My apology amounted to a plain recognition of the unlovely fact, and included a promise that I would not again transgress by calling it into existence. I am glad to say that I have even more than fulfilled this promise. A friend suggested the advisability of issuing the annual as a seasonal also; so that it should include all those sales which occur from book-season to book-season, that is to say, from November to August, in each year. This struck me as being a happy thought, and I determined upon realizing it to a happy issue. The present volume, therefore, contains a selection from all the sales which have taken place since the date of the sale last recorded in Book Sales of to the end of the present season. My next volume will, I hope, continue the record from November, 1897, to July 3rst, 1898, and so on. In this way, I purpose, on the eve of each year's book sale season to have ready for my subscribers, a record of the season just ended. I trust this will meet with their approval. To make up for the deficiency in matter, which the omission of the sales for the' coming November and December means, I have added a supplement of three of the most important book sales held in America. I hope to continue this feature in coming volumes. As in my two' previous volumes, the considerations which weighed with me in my selection, have been, the wants of (r) the book collector, and (2) the bookseller and again I may say that no sale has been omitted which in any way contributed to satisfy either of these. One sale stands pre - eminently distinguished among the many which have occurred, and it is one which must, of necessity, take its place among, what may be termed, the classic sales in the history of book collecting.
