The reasons for this go beyond the fact that Franck was himself Belgian and that, as his pupil, Chausson drew sustenance from the same music as well. The more pertinent reason is that the Spiegel Quartet is sweet-toned but clear, passionately argued but lucid, and deeply felt but not sentimental -- all qualities both these late Romantic works need to succeed. In Franck's immense four-movement work, the Spiegel does a superlative job of holding it all together through a cogent interpretation and powerful playing. In Chausson's unfinished three-movement work -- a fourth movement was left unbegun at the time of the composer's tragically early death -- the Spiegel does an outstanding job of making a satisfying whole out of the three extant movements.
