(The only work of his I knew was, "I Was Glad," a monumental anthem used for the coronation of QEII.) He was surprisingly influential in his day, and his music deserves another look. Moreover, his life was interesting, and it will serve as an inspiration to those who have wrestled with the issues he encountered in his life. As Dibble notes in his preface, he has been able to treat some of the less savory aspects of Parry's family life without the inhibitions that early authors encountered from the survival of Parry relatives. The review contains numerous musical examples, and for such a scholarly work, is quite readable.
