What is the trade of Egypt P The caravan, or carrying-trade, is the chief; and from Cairo, the centre of this commerce, caravans proceed to Dongola, Sennaar, Dar-fur, and Fezzan: five thousand camels are said to be employed solely in the caravan trade to andfrom Morocco and this country. The commerce of Egypt with eastern nations is no longer an extensive one, but the Egyptians import drugs and coffee from Arabia; spices, in particular cinnamon, from the isle of Ceylon; muslins They were both at Alexandria; but Cleopatra's Needle is removed from its antient site for a situation in London. and silks from India; shawls from Cashmere, and hardware of every description from Constantinople. The natives of Cairo manufacture into linen the fine Egyptian flax: sal-ammoniac and sugar are exported by them. RECOLLECTIONS ON A FEW OF THE TOWNS IN EGYPT. Cairo (Kahira), the capital of Egypt; once a great, rich, and most commercial, city, is now much declined in wealth and power; it is divided into three parts, Old Cairo, New Cairo, and the port of Bulac, which stands upon the Nile; the streets of this city are to Europeans most uncomfortably narrow; it once contained three hundred mosques. On the north side of Bulac is the Chalige, or great canal, which runs thence quite through the town of Cairo: when the Nile rises, the water is let into this canal; and thence, by small channels, distributed to the surrounding country.
