When depravity comes to St. Florian Valley in the form of the artist Peter and his alluring mistress, the virtuous townsfolk are determined to stamp it out. But they have no idea what they're up against. Nor, indeed, does the Devil, who has arrived there with Peter in the hope of corrupting the souls of this pious community. Written in 1907, Ivan Cankar's farce remains a standard on the Slovene stage today, and the phrase "St. Florian Valley" has become a byword for the kind of small-minded hypocritical moralism Cankar mocks. But the tragic heart of the play lies in Peter's (and the playwright's) bitter yet undying love for the home that has rejected him. This is a new translation of Ivan Cankar's play Pohujsanje v dolini sentflorjanski (Depravity in St.Florian Valley), originally published in 1908.
