In Charaka Samhita (6th century AD), B. monnieri is mentioned as a medicine for the management of mental dysfunctions such as anxiety, poor cognition, and lack of concentration. B. monnieri produces various metabolites such as saponins, alkaloids and sterols. The main active constituents of B. monnieri are dammarane-type triterpenoid saponins known as bacosides with jujubogenin or pseudo jujubogenin as their aglycone units.
