Fatherhood is hard. Nobody awakens one day and decides that they're going to be absent from their children's lives. No father would ever dream of becoming a deadbeat daddy. And yet that's the common narrative in America, and especially in areas where poverty and other systemic issues fuel the breakdown of the family. I never wanted to become the problem of fatherlessness. It hurt the first time I heard my children's mother refer to me as a "deadbeat." It hurts today, having to wear the label unwillingly. I thought I tried my best. Even then, I made many mistakes, and missed the mark of what a father ought to be. The following pages contain letters that I've written with my childfren in mind. Each chapter serves as a thoughtful reflection of where I went wrong, and how I could've done better. Every father deals with the losses and longings of fatherhood differently. And yet the plight of us all is the same: the hope one day to reverse the curse of being dubbed a "deadbeat daddy."
