One is led by such references as these and by the location of the river on the maps to think the " R: de s. Antonio " none other than the Hudson. Accepting the latitude, as given by Oviedo, as the one reached by Gomez, we are brought into the vicinity of Delaware Bay and Cape Henlopen for the terminus of his discoveries, or as appears on the map to "C: de arenas."77 " Vide Oviedo: Historia General de las Indian, chaps, bc-xi, bk. XXI for the descrip-tion of the Atlantic coast of North America. This description, as Kohl well says "is the fullest and best Spanish report on our coast of the sixteenth century. Oviedo is one of the foremost authorities on early Spanish America. An English translation of his work would be well received. " A Welmar-Rlbero legend well to the west of the Atlantic coast reads: "All along this northern coast the'lndians are of larger stature than those of Santo Domingo and of the other Islands. They eat made and fish, which they have In great abundance, and they hunt much game and other animals and they wear the skins of wolves and foxes.' To the south of "TiEBA De Estevam Gomez" lies Del Licenciado AiLLOM."78 The name somewhat altered in form has place for many years on the maps. It does not appear from the written record that a very extensive section of the coast was explored by Ayllon nor do the maps tell us anything to the contrary.
