I first read a short story by Masters in Shamambala's Best Buddhist Writings of 2007. His candor, thoughtfulness and humor were striking. I had to read more, hence aquiring "Finding Freedom". I was not the least bit disppointed. His abilitiy to convey in a starkly poetic manner what life for him and others is like within the confines of San Quentin's death row can only be respected and admired. Each chapter is singular on its own, yet connected to all the rest creates a well told story of a young man's life of crime, incarceration and spiritual growth. I appreciated that he does not sugar-coat his spiritual pratice as a Buddhist - very refreshing. Jarvis Jay Masters has given us a real gift of Life and Humanity having written this book.
