The Gold cover with design by Robert James Foose is clean and unmarked, with chip to upper front corner, trace wear to edges. Binding is solid, square. Rear side has a spot on the upper edge. Pages are clean and free from any markings, no creases, toned. There are ten essays, written over a period from 1950 to 1962, with their common concern the questions of the meaning of criticism and the larger meaning of literature itself. The first part is a discussion of literary theory; the second and third parts have essays on particular topics such as the meaning of symbolism, Aristotle's doctrines of tragic plot and catharsis, the theory of comic laughter, and the objective of reading English meters; comments on particular writers--the imagination of James Boswell, an analysis of the comedy of T.S. Eliot, and a contrast of the poetic handling of similar themes by Tennyson and Eliot. The fourth part is a comprehensive statement of the demands and opportunities confronting the practical critic in his/her role as teacher.
