Hannah Howell's entire Highland Series is a joy to read. Sigimor is a delightful mix of strong, resourceful, capable man and mischievious, playful little boy. Jolene, as all of Howell's heroines, is a strong, brave, passionate woman. Thank you for NOT creating shreaking, helpless bowls of pudding, but instead women who get in there with a big stick or rock and defend themselves and their loved ones. While some of the logistics may be a little unbelievable, as in how many baths 15th century highlanders actually took or defeating your enemies against enormous odds, the whole series is a delight!!!

Debt of Honor
I recommend this book heartily! This is the best of the "Highland" books by far that I have read (well of the 5 I have read...). I will read the others but likely not any other of Howell's books. I fell in love reading period novels when I read books by Lisa Jackson and Linda Howard. Thus, I started this series with the books available to me. Not the initial books of the series and I am hoping that by going back, I will not be too disappointed (well in anything other than the romance portions - her books contain duplicate love scenes in her books - no deviation at all - same scenes just two different people. If I read books purely for the sake of romance, I would never pick up another Howell book - one would have been enough as each book is EXACTLY the same in the bedroom, alehouse, on the shores of a pond, in the woods, ect. I prefer plot driven books that have little or no romance - OR where romance is secondary and does not matter to the story). Anyway - this book has a great story line beginning to end. Sigimor is a man of honor trying to repay a debt of honor - only to find himself too late and shackled in a dungeon near gallows (hanging). She is a Lady in danger herself from the very same man Sigimor is. Sigimor makes a deal with her since he could not repay his honor debt to her brother. Along the way, they are chased and the plot thickens (of course they fall in love...). What he does not know about her (her secret) is as much a danger as for the reason he agreed to help her (a child). This is a plot driven book (yes, don't ask - you will find those same EXACT love scenes in this book as in any of the other Howell novels - she needs to dump them or get new ideas - there ARE other ways to have a "mating". Some of her novels are good without the scenes and the veritifiable coping book to book is getting tedious to read...) so it is good. The book is substantial and has a few twists that are not found out until later in the book (unusual) which adds to the story. This is a good book you will read once for sure, but may even peek at again.

Hannah Howell's best
Proof that an oft-told tale can be full of surprises.
It sounds simplistic, but this is a really good book. Everything about it works together so perfectly to create a world of characters and events you respond to from instinct. Like all really good stories, you know the characters on so many levels that you come to love or hate these people for very good, solid reasons.
I'm about to read it again just because I so enjoyed spending time with Jolene and Sigimor the first time around.
