Francis Schaeffer's Classic Analysis of the Rise and Decline of Western Thought and Culture As one of the foremost evangelical thinkers of the twentieth century, Francis A. Schaeffer long pondered the fate of declining Western culture. Profoundly aware of the similarities modern culture shares with societies that came before, Schaeffer embarked on a journey to uncover the movements that gave rise to modern culture and resulted in the decline of the Christian worldview. Forty years later, his classic book How Should We Then Live? is as relevant today as it was when it was first published. Schaeffer argues that the erosion of society begins with a shift away from biblical truth. To support this claim, he walks readers through history, beginning with the fall of Rome, through the Middle Ages, the Enlightenment, and up to the twentieth century. This latest edition analyzes the reasons for modern society's state of affairs and presents the solution: living by the Christian ethic, fully accepting God's revelation, and affirming the morals, values, and meaning of the Bible. A Theology Classic: Written by renowned Christian philosopher Francis A. Schaeffer For Those Interested in Philosophy and History: Engages with the ideas of Plato, John Locke, Thomas Jefferson, and Voltaire, and examines the art, architecture, and ideas that shaped modern society Explores the Importance of a Christian Worldview: A practical assessment of the evolution of culture and the steadfast alternative offered by the biblical perspective

I found this book quite disappointing, I thought this book talk more about the changes in our religion and culture. The book talked more on art and its affect on our society. I bought this book to use in homeschooling my high school students. Didn't use for the purpose I had hoped.

An Eye Opener
I have heard a lot about Schaeffer but never really checked out his material. I must admit now though that Schaeffer hits the proverbial nail on the head! After reading "He Is There and He Is Not Silent" I was hooked. My eyes were definately opened after reading "How Should We Then Live?". It is a great book looking over history at the rise of Western thought and culture and it's eventual decay and destruction. Schaeffer can be wordy, but he is by far the easiest to read of the philosophers that I have read. He explains his terms clearly and writes with the common man in mind. If anyone wants to study on why we are where we are today as a society this is a great book to start with!

History shaped by religion
Dr. Schaeffer gives an indepth look at how history was shaped by religion through man's search for meaning and significance. Great information for teachers and those who felt they did not get the entire truth in history class. The good Doctor is wordy, but hid vocabulary is not too hard to follow.
If anyone is looking for a book idea, "Scaeffer for Dummies" would be a good one.
