This is the first in a series of fascicles comprising an international classification of rodent tumours that is intended to provide information and guidelines especially adapted for worldwide use in practical toxicologic pathology. The format of the text has been carefully designed to be as concise and easy to use as possible. Included in the classification are all tumours and relevant pre-neoplastic lesions for which histopathological slides are available or which have been documented with pictures in the literature. The goal of this classificaiton is to harmonize and standardize the international nomenclature and diagnostic criteria to be used for regulatory purposes. The complete range of organ systems in the rat will be covered in a total of 10 fascicles. Fascicle 1 focuses on the organs of the respiratory system. Each fascicle is divided into different data sheets containing the essential information on a particular lesion. Each data sheet in turn is presented in a standard format for ease of use. The diagnostic descriptions comprise the main histopathological features of the specified lesion, and are presented in the form of a concise list. Most data sheets include at least one typical micrograph, selected from both spontaneous and induced lesions. This unique, internationally standardized reference will be of interest to all pathologists involved in long-term carcinogenicity studies.
