In addition to being a great trumper player, Stewart is an insightful and competent chronicler of what made these jazz masters so special. There is an obvious preference for Ellington (Stewart spent a good period of time in the orchestra) but also an abundance of anecdotes and insights into such greats as Coleman Hawkins, Red Norvo, Johhy Hodges and many more. A very interesting primary source for anyone looking to understand the era and the people who made jazz what it is.
