In consequence of this vital union, virtue flows from Christ into believers, a virtue which pre cedes, follows, and accompanies good works. Thus the righteous ness of believers may properly be called the righteousness of God, since it flows from God to them, and conversely the righteousness of God may be called their righteousness, since the virtue of Christ excites, co - operates, and unites with human free-will, so as to render it theirs. It follows thatjustified persons satisfy the divine law by their good works which are performed in God, and if they depart in grace, they truly merit the attainment of eternal life.
