This recording of Rachmaninoff was superb. It dramatically illustrates what music can sound like with an expert sound technician on board. I have Yophim Bronfman's Rachmaninoff recording made with the New York Philharmonic, a live performance which was considered sensational, but the placement of microphones (especially for the piano soloist) and relative sound levels between orchestra and pianist were botched by the sound engineer. Not so with Lang Lang's recording, which was "electrifying" by comparison.
