In those countries, and on the fertile shore of Asia Minor, the rapid development of the wealth of the cities offered facilities for the cultivation of refined tastes; but the same cause undermined their vigour and their patriotism, and ultimately deprived them of their independence. In the products of continental Greece, also, there was nothing to minister to indulgence; they provided what was necessary for life, while articles of luxury had to be imported from abroad. Effect It should aiso be noticed that the clearness of the purity of the atmosphere, and the vigorous soundness of the temperament of the people, was reflected in their language. When we consider that the Greeks did not, until quite late in the history of their literature, possess any system of grammatical rules, it is a marvel how there could have arisen a vehicle of thought so accurate, so luminous, and so expressive, as the Greek language. To give hirth to this, and to hring it to perfection, the most favourable conditions, both internal and external, --both in the mind of the people and in the circumstances under which they lived, --must have been requisite. That a crowd of people should have been able to follow and appreciate the plays of Sophocles and the speeches of Demosthenes is wonderful enough; but that the writer and speaker should have succeeded, without the aid of strict rules, in carrying his thoughts through long periods, containing a multiplicity of clatises, and involving infinite modifications of ideas, without risk of confusion, is an unparalleled phenomenon. But while the language was thus brought to perfection by the agency of one set 'of causes, it was being divided by other.
