Since there is such a dearth of books about this president, this book seems to be the only definitive portrait, It is very dense, full of incidental information and details on just about everyone alive at the time. For one who was looking for a basic biography about the man it is more than what I was seeking. The author did a great deal of research, all of which seems to be included in this book. I found it difficult to read because so much information is packed in each chapter. I wished the author had culled some of the superfluous information and anecdotes.
