We can only respond with understanding to the selfhood of the Church in China today when we appreciate the difference between it and the earlier Three Self Church the missionaries attempted to create. In the area and mission body examined there was both a clearly expressed mission policy to create such a Church, and a local context in which the Opium Trade, appeals to the Unequal Treaties, and the reaction of intense Chinese nationalism, alike promoted or thwarted, distorted or distracted the missionary intention. The historical characters involved ranged from Gutzlaff and his Chinese Union to Peng Pai and the first Chinese Soviet, 1927. Examining the continuity and discontinuity between the pre and post Liberation Church suggests a new understanding of the Chinese Church's selfhood and how we may respond to it.
