This book does exactly what is says on the tin. It follows the experience of a real small German town in rural Hannover between 1930 and 1933. In painstaking detail it shows how the Nazis grew from a tiny fringe party to the biggest single group with total control over the town and Germany as a whole. The marches, fights, "German" evenings of entertainment, special trains to hear Hitler speak - all the devices to attract attention and support are described. The eventual take-over by the Nazi party of every aspect of life in "Thalburg" (the town has been renamed) comes with an air of inevitability. The authour shows how the main opposition to the Nazis succeeded in alienating the middle classes without engaging bthe working class in effective opposition. At the same time, the middle class was hostile to democracy, subscribing to the myth of the "November criminals" and the stab in the back for the German army in the First World War. The Nazis eagerly propounded this lie, but their propoganda fell on ears that already subscribed to it.
