Have a Runner Tackle ready and stretched, along with a Lashing Block, to assist in purchasing the Anchor, if necessary. Reserve new and dry Nippers for the moment of being up and down, and have Sand ready to aid in making them bite. Bring to--If there be much wind or sea, this must probably be done with a Racking Nipper, and perhaps Racking Nippers must be continued till the first one reaches the after-part of the Main Hatchway; care being also taken not to unbit or unstopper the Cable rashly. If, on the other hand, there be not much wind or sea, and little strain on the Cable, bring to, with Nippers, in the common way--heave tort--and, when the bight of the Cable is tort from the Bitts, unbit, and get Cable and Messenger a-top of the Bitts. Pay down slack Cable, and heave away. If a Nipper jams, Stopper before all, and walk back the Capstan. The strain then coming on the Stopper, relieves the Nipper. For keeping the part of the Messenger which is passed round the Capstan up and clear, one turn of the other, one or more hands must attend with an Iron Lever, spread at the end, and flattened so as to enter easily between these turns of the Messenger, and sufficiently long to afford a powerful prise. Such a Lever, it may be observed, is noted under the head of " Fitting," as necessary to be made by the Ship's Armourer. To prevent Surging, the Turns ought to be kept close and steadily up.
