Glen Cook does an outstanding job of telling a gritty, no nonsense story of a space ship at war. Told from the perspective of a combat reporter shipping out with a "Climber" crew to write a first-hand account for the folks "back home". The "Climbers" are roughly similar to WWII submarines in the way they operate, but the author has inserted enough differences to make the story entertaining. You can definitely see shades of 'Das Boot' in the story though. It might just add to your enjoyment to see the movie again right before or after you read the book. Definitely helped me picture the scene in my head. It's a good story. If you like space combat with a little harder edge than most space opera, this ones for you!
