Associated neither with the English pastoral group that gathered around Vaughan Williams, nor with Schoenberg's 12-tone school, Fricker was difficult to pigeonhole, and his music was loosely compared to Bartók, Stravinsky, and Hindemith, due to his adherence to tonality, free use of dissonant counterpoint, and interest in rhythmic innovation. As a result, Fricker fell out of favor with the serialist avant-garde of the '50s and the aleatoric movement of the '60s, and his music more or less disappeared from the repertoire.
