Not illustrated. 1817 edition. Excerpt: ... MUSWELL HILL, A village in Middlesex, five miles and a half V from London, in the parish of Hornsey. It derives its name from a famous well on the hill, where, formerly, the fraternity of St. John of Jerusalem, in Clerkenwell, had their dairy, with a large farm adjacent. Here they hnilt a chapel for the henefit of some nuns, in which they fixed the image of our Lady of Muswell. These nuns had the sole management of the dairy; and it is singnlar, that the said well and farm do, at this time, helong to the parish of St. James, Clerkenwell. The water of this spring was then deemed a miraculous cure for scrofulous anti cntaneous disorders. For that reason it was mnch resorted to. Tradition says, a King of Scotland made a pilgrimage hither, and was perfectly cured-from this and other springs on the hill. The Mosel, a rivulet, takes its rise, and passing through Tottenham, empties itself into the river Lea. Muswell Hill is an ahrupt knoll, which joins to several others, called the Mitchell Hills. Rising from the valley of Hornsey, they form a circular range of some space, commanding views of the surrounding country to an immense extent. The same coaches that go to Hornsey, take passengers to and from this village. Declining Muswell Hill, yon continne the road that leads to the right, leaving Hornsey, which we have already descrihed, to the left, and pass the rural village of Cronch End. Here are several seats; hnt the most uniqne and tasteful villa is Holland House, the seat of Mr. Shaw, which stands on a considerahle elevation, ahont a quarter of a mile from the village.
