"The advance of meteorology as a school study has beenmuch hampered by the lack of a published outline of workin this subject which may be undertaken during the schoolyears. There are several excellent text-books for moreadvanced study, but there is no laboratory manual for use inthe elementary portions of the science. In many secondaryschools some instruction in meteorology is given, and thekeeping of meteorological records by the scholars is everyyear becoming more general. There is yet, however, butlittle system in this work, and, in consequence, there is littledefinite result. The object of this book is to supply a guidein the elementary observational and inductive studies inmeteorology. This Manual is not intended to replace thetext-books, but is designed to prepare the way for theirmore intelligent use. Simple preliminary exercises in thetaking of meteorological observations, and in the study ofthe daily weather maps, as herein suggested, will lay a goodfoundation on which later studies, in connection with thetext-books, may be built up. Explanations of the variousfacts discovered through these exercises are not consideredto lie within the scope of this book. They may be found inany of the newer text-books."
