This seminal study and critique of propaganda from one of the greatest French philosophers of the 20th century is as relevant today as when it was first published in 1962. Taking not only a psychological approach, but a sociological approach as well, Ellul's book outlines the taxonomy for propaganda, and ultimately, it's destructive nature towards democracy. Drawing from his own experiences fighting for the French resistance against the Vichy regime, Ellul offers a unique insight into the propaganda machine.

The amount of information Jacques Ellul gives the reader is astounding. Gone are the days of thinking of propaganda as easy to spot, or believing I myself cannot be subject to and changed by propaganda. Propaganda is part of any modern society and is constantly evolving. Ellul illuminates the wide variety of propaganda that was used at the time of writing and one can only imagine the wide array of new methods being implemented today. Very well written, plenty of explanations. Ellul does not expect the reader to be an expert on the subject matter, but instead makes it very readable to anyone interested in the subject. While not an "easy" read anyone who has read a couple of social commentary books can grasp his message.
