Not illustrated. 1920 Excerpt: ...to understand that one has not far to go in such a study as ours, before realising that the number of subjects of interest which cannot be conventionalised, cannot easily be surrounded by polygons nor subjected to the geometrical measurements or to analyses such as we have so far sketched, far outnumber those which submit themselves readily to these methods. Other means therefore have to be devised for the examination of these less manageable subjects and we shall treat them briefly in this chapter both for convenience' sake and because many varying classes may be found to belong, on inspection, to the same natural or geometric family. The beauty of all of these forms has many times been keenly felt 1 From The Great Modules, C. Arthur Coan, 1914. when, perhaps, it could scarcely be expressed. Such a marvellous brain as that of Leonardo could conceive the perfectly correct idea that the wing-tips of flying birds formed lines which were spiral in their completed whole; and this stood, like the sound theories of Pythagoras, as a charming and useless brain-child for several hundred years until, in Leonardo's case, the kinematograph came to the rescue and proved that he was perfectly accurate in his surmise. Every great mathematician, every great artist, every great architect, in the past generations has felt the urge of these varied curves which are not circles; and many have given invaluable time to their analysis, nor could the results be packed into a mere chapter. Space forbids a review of these previous studies in extenso. They are, nevertheless, open to all of the serious minded: and I would guard against the thought that any attempt has been made to catalogue or recite any considerable portion of what has been said concerning these beauties of form and a...
