Combined System of Drains.--When the roof and surface water is all admitted into the house drains, the drainage is said to be on the combinedsystem. In such cases it is necessary to calculate the area of the roofs of the buildings, and also to compute the area of the paved yards and other surfaces from which the rain-water is conducted into the drainage system. In making rainfall calculations it is necessary to ascertain not only the greatest rainfall which may occur in twenty-four hours, but also to compute or provide for the maximum volume of rain-water which may have to be carried away during sudden storms. Rain gauges are now made which by means of clockwork are designed to record the rate at which the rain is falling during every hour in the day. Separate Systems o! Drainage.--When the rain-water is excluded from the sewage drains and conveyed away by a second set of pipes, the building is said to be drained on the separate system. Drains with Purification Works.--When sewage purification works form part of the design, it is often advantageous to employ the separate system, because during rainstorms very large volumes of water would otherwise be conveyed to these works. Storm Water.---Sudden rushes of storm water are likely to tax the purification works beyond their proper capacity, unless the latter are specially designed to meet such occurrences. It must not be assumed, however, that the filtration area of purification works must bear a direct ratio to the actual volume of liquid passing through the filters, as the researches and reports of the Sewage Commission show that sewage filters are capable of dealing successfully with a much larger volume of sewage when diluted with rain-water than with dry-wea...
