Seller's Description:
VG in VG jacket. Size: 0x0x0; Dust jacket condition: VG. Very nice clean copy. This dictionary is the first work devoted to translating solely technical terms and expressions of the statistical sciences from Russian to English and, as such, is invaluable to those interested in utilizing Russian literature not available in translation. Compiled from a word list drawn from original sources, such as selected Russian articles and books in statistics and related areas, including the most recent publications, the dictionary contains over five thousand terms and expressions. Entries from closely related fields such as the theory of games, queueing theory, information theory, and quality control are also included. Bearing in mind that in translating scientific papers at least two dictionaries are usually needed (a general one and one pertaining to the particular field), the author, Samuel Kotz, and his collaborator, Wassily Hoeffding, have not included such words as "precipitation, " "beverages, " "food industry, " and the like, that although frequently found in the text of statistical tables cannot be considered statistical terms per se. Instead (continued from front flap) r J the compilers have selected as many specifically statistical expressions as possible, especially those that cannot be found in either general or mathematical Russian-English dictionaries. The Russian Reader is in the form of an interlinear translation of passages from recent Soviet publications. The purpose of the Reader is to assist those, who, with a modest background in basic Russian at the level of a two-term study of the language in a university, or its equivalent, are interested in acquiring a reading knowledge of "statistical" Russian without further detailed study of the structure of the Russian language. A passage of familiar context in Russian, supplemented by a word-by-word interlinear translation in English, facilitates to a great extent the memorization of Russian words contained in the passage. The appendix provides a bilingual author index-i.e., a list of Russian transliterations and the English forms of the names of approximately two hundred statisticians. 133 pages.
