Most evident is the presence of a complete second movement, in a 2012 completion by Brian Newbould, of the String Quartet in C minor, D. 703 ("Quartettsatz"), but there's also the fact that this is a historically oriented performance, something that's not so common for Schubert. The players of the Fitzwilliam String Quartet use 18th century Italian instruments with 19th century Viennese thick gut strings, probably a common configuration for the first players of these quartets, and their sound is sharp and intense. Listeners will have to make up their own minds about Newbould's completion; to these ears, it has a few unidiomatic harmonic moves, but the exercise is intriguing. There are also some unusual details of interpretation, discussed by violist Alan George in an informative note, and the instruments are tuned to A=433 Hz, apparently a common pitch in Vienna at the time.
