Published by the American Geophysical Union as part of theGeophysical Monograph Series, Volume 157. Seismology is one of the few means available to Earth scientistsfor probing the mechanical structure of the Earth's interior. Theadvent of modern seismic instrumentation at the end of the 19thcentury and its installation across the globe was shortly followedby mankind's first general understanding of the Earth's interior: The Croatian seismologist Andrija Mohorovi???i??? discoveredthe crust-mantle boundary in central Europe in 1909, the GermanBeno Gutenberg determined the radius of the Earth's core in 1913, Great Britian's Sir Harold Jeffreys established its fluid characterby 1926, and the Dane Inge Lehman discovered the solid inner corein 1936. It is notable that seismology, even in its earliest days, was an international science. Unlike much of the Earth sciences, seismology has its roots in physics, notably optics (manyuniversity seismology programs are, or initially were, attached tometeorology, astronomy, or physics departments), and draws from theliteratures of imaging systems and statistical communicationstheory developed by, or employed in, astronomy, electricalengineering, medicine, ocean acoustics, and nondestructivematerials testing. Seismology has close ties to petro-physics andmineral physics, the measurements of the disciplines being comparedto infer the chemical and physical structure of the Earth'sinterior.
