The sulphur is precipitated in a large volume of cold solution, by barium chloride solution, as BaS04 and so weighed. Reagents. Bromine--Potassium Bromide Solution. 320 grams of potassium bromide are dissolved in just sufficient water to cause solution and mixed with 200 cc. of bromine, the bromine being poured into the saturated bromide solution. After mixing well the solution is diluted to 2000 cc. Bromine--Carbon Tetrachloride Solution. Carbon tetrachloride saturated with bromine. Barium Chloride, anhydrous, 5% solution; or crystals, 6% solution. Procedure. Preparation of Sample. The sample ground to pass 80-mesh sieve is carefully mixed and quartered down to 10 grams. This is dried for one hour at 100 C. and then placed in a weighing tube. A factor weight, 1.3738 grams of the sample, is placed in a deep beaker, 300 cc. capacity, 2 by 4j ins. Oxidation of Sulphur. Ten cc. of the bromine-potassium bromide mixture for pyrrhotite ore, or bromine--carbon tetrachloride reagent for pyrites ores, are added and the beaker covered with a dry watch-glass cover.
