A fast rising star in the CCM world, the Oregon-bred singer/songwriter achieves a creative but wholly unforced blend of all of the elements that define catchy, modern rock -- hip-hop, reggae, pop, alt-rock, old-school jazz, jangly acoustic guitars, soaring Coldplay-like harmonies. The one difference, of course, is he's confessing his sins and focusing on God's glory, truly from sunup to sundown. The blend of playful acoustic guitars, funky drums, and soaring harmonies on the simply titled "Heaven" draws the listener into an experience that grows richer by the track. The title tune has a lyrical, stripped-down folky quality that blends beautifully with the textured harmonies of the chorus, while "Take This Life" propels the concept of confessional rock to a new level. "Come Around" is a showcase for Wright's convincing rap and reggae skills, but he doesn't forget to include a few of his trademark -- here comes that word again -- harmonies. He's also in a jangly guitar meets rap mode on the feel-good summertime-inspired track "I Can Feel Your Love," on which he suggests happily that God is in the midst of every barbecue and blue sky. Despite his spiritual seriousness, he enjoys sharing the goofy side of his personality on "Burrito Boy," a humorous account of his intense love of Mexican food and falling in love with the girl who prepares it. Many artists who employ his range of musical influences draw upon the darkness of life, but Wright's intention is to engage on a much more optimistic level, beautifully inspired by his faith. ~ Jonathan Widran, Rovi
